2022 HITOIKI/GERMANY

HITOIKI (2019–2022) was presented in Germany as part of bike in head,

a multi-venue exhibition project organized by Städtische Galerie Bremen.

The project focused on the subject of the bicycle in visual art and was realized in cooperation with Bike it!, the City of Bremen’s cycling initiative operated by WFB Bremen Economic Development.

bike in head was conceived as a public exhibition project that connected contemporary art, urban culture, and movement, and was developed through collaboration between multiple public art institutions.

Partner venues included Haus Coburg – Städtische Galerie Delmenhorst and Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven.

Curatorial Text

Kosuke Masuda presented a series of 130 ink drawings surrounding the theme of bicycles and bicycle riding.

Working with traditional Japanese ink techniques, cyclists appear as isolated figures within landscapes, at times shifting toward non-figurative images. The brushstrokes often resemble tire tracks, revealing analogies between drawing and cycling without becoming illustrative.

The curatorial text also highlights the influence of Masuda’s background as a Buddhist monk. Each drawing is executed in a single breath, allowing movement, breath, and mental focus to converge into a single act. Rather than depicting the bicycle as an object, the works emphasize movement, transmission of force, and the spirit associated with it.The series “HITOIKI” (2019~2022) was exhibited and participated in "BIKE IN HEAD" at Städtische Galerie Bremen in GERMANY 07/23/2022 - 09/18/2022 .
